POSTURES OF WORKIn a remote-first company, employees' expectations and ways of work have evolved. Under the unknowns of hybrid work's future, the headquarters was designed to prioritize choice, offering many types of environments to work in.Meeting spaces (enclosed rooms and open areas) are varied to match different types of meeting scenarios: lounges for casual brainstorming, bar-height tables for face-to-face virtual calls, dining tables for focused work.

During a time of supply chain challenges and an industry-wide urgency to return to the office, the proposed design had to remain fluid and be executed quickly with no construction and no permit. The project leveraged the existing architecture and became an opportunity to lean on different mediums to tell Figma's story. Utilizing furniture, millwork, art, paint, accessories, and plants, this became a testament to the value and importance of 

multi-disciplinary design.

A WALKING GALLERY

The project was a storytelling exercise, communicating brand, curiosity, and creation through mixed media. The artwork features 30 international artists with 90 new pieces, ranging from painting, photography, to sculpture. Site-specific murals make up the pantries and workstation neighborhoods, including works by commissioned artists and Figmates.

	github mountain
GitHub's ground floor once housed a series of amenities that were incrementally added over time, resulting in a disorienting experience and confusing environmental identity for the brand. As a company in constant movement, GitHub needed a focal point that organizes and clarifies, doubling as a node for San Francisco and for all satellite offices globally: a mountain. The mountain grounds the building and fosters a perpetual flow around the space. This becomes center stage for users, employees, leadership, and community members alike, live streaming broadcast events and hosting international conferences.

A MOUNTAIN IN MOMENTUM

In the center of this amenity-rich floor, the central mountain touches and spills into adjacent spaces, acting as a backdrop to these amenities. It directs circulation and flow for a community that is constantly in motion. The mountain is a stage for broadcasting, a theaterspace for gatherings, a coffee shop for guests, a bar for celebrations, and a retail store for community members.

A DISTRIBUTED NETWORK, LANDED

Everyone, everywhere, but in one place. The mountain is a landing point for constituents everywhere, including customers, Hubbers, community leaders, satellite office guests, and executive leadership. This is a place for people and information, broadcasting real-time connections between people and digital activity abroad.

The Garden Islands is an experiment in designing for proximity. As part of a post-pandemic "Return to Office" program, Garden Islands features a series of workstation modules that meet present and future headcount density requirements while considering pandemic-driven conditions, such as hybrid work and social distancing. This office floor is a prototype for future tenant improvements in other locations and is designed to accommodate unknown variables including density needs and user groups. This is also a radical rethink to what office design is capable of, transforming the visual landscape of a floorplate and balancing between focus and collaboration without leaving your desk.

These islands populate the entire office floor, creating a forested environment for unique adjacencies between colleagues while allowing focused work with undisturbed sightlines.

PROXIMITY AND FOCUS
Flexibility is optimized in order for this prototypical floor to be implemented in any condition. Workstations are laid out to ensure sufficient proximity between seats. Plant layouts are intended to control sightlines for focused work. Quantity of workstations are designed to fit a certain radius for density needs.

A MINDFUL TOUCH
In an environment where person-to-person face time is highly valued, touchpoints became the foundation to the floor experience. Leather drawer pulls for soft touch, side stools for impromptu conversations, flexible mounting for future equipment, distance to nearby phone rooms.

PROGRAMMATIC OPPORTUNITIES
As a flexible module, these desk islands anticipate changes in type of user group. The needs and interests of software engineers differ from those in people operations. As such, the central plantings can be swapped out based on team needs, from plantings to rotating artwork to presentation monitors.

The desk islands are designed to be disassembled and reorganized, with power strategy and mobility in mind. This is to accommodate future headcount changes as return-to-office policies evolve.

THE FACTORY 2.0

Inspired by Andy Warhol's creative space The Factory, the Executive Suite evolved into a working, art studio space, steering away from the Californian-Japandi style that proliferates Silicon Valley. The space's program provides zones of work to foster creative needs without compromising utility needs.

COLLECTED, NOT CURATED

The space began with three columns of intent: personal, imperfect, and dynamic. The studio needs to feel lived-in, not curated. It needs to feel vulnerable, not polished. This fine balance established the guardrails for the design, between messy creative work and precise leadership tasks.

HUMAN FIRST
The design was a touchpoints-led process: people first, architecture second. A conference table topped with marmoleum to quietly place objects, intuitive temperature controls, flexible millwork to hide unused monitors. Strategic user-journey study was utilized to understand where these important moments occur and how to transpose them into the greater design.

With a new neighbor taking over the iconic mall of Westside Pavilion, this project site is a target for public scrutiny, perceived as an erasure of the neighborhood's history. How does the new tenant communicate a commitment to Los Angeles? How can this influence or affect the public's impression of this company?



The building's shell was an opportunity for design investigation and to establish a perspective unique to its new owner. A ghosted reconstruction of the mall's iconic postmodern design sits aface of the building shell. The applied facade is proposed in select areas to accentuate the new architecture while bringing back the mall's memorable features, allowing multiple histories to coexist.Design Architect: Rapt Studio

The facade intervention harkens back to a history that is imprinted on the local culture. The design features Westside Pavilion's clocktower on Pico Boulevard, an iconic detail of the landmark's past.

Inspired by the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the proposed facade structure extracts iconic postmodern moments from the original mall (such its entry arches, plaster pilasters, and the clock tower) and lays them over the new building. The tubesteel framework provides translucency to create a ghostly effect, maintains natural light into the office interior, and minimizes load on the building's structure.

The structure requires different mediums to tell its story: lightweight tubesteel, applied vinyl, perforated metal, structural steel, and integral lighting. This complicated mix of materials required thoughtful strategy and approval by stakeholders and consultants. This design, through its many iterations, was created to meet many conflicting conditions: work within planning's easement limits, sized to fit freight vehicles, coordinated to align with the building's existing structure, and be disassembled at the end of the tenant's lease.

The design process heavily relied on collaborative and consistent communication between the design team, the structural engineer, and the building owner. The design is the structure and the structure is the design, requiring simultaneous buy-off from all teams involved in every phase, every iteration.

FORMING A STORY

Studies of what and how the facade could be reimagined were tested within the lens of architectural design, public perception, visual communication, and construction costs. For many of these, the designs were reviewed through the perspective of the community: how can we be good community members and ensure the public perceives this project positively. Various strategies were presented to not only narrow in on a design direction, but to also sculpt the story the client wants to tell.

Open spaces, though meant for all-hands meetings and informal gatherings, double
as product presentation space. Since the company works with large scale objects (ie.

The Pillow Cloud is a custom installation that hangs above the commons where all-hands meetings are held. 117 Casper Pillowcases are handsewn together,
tessellating to create a flickering field of glowing light and soft shadows. Pillow Cloud floats above Casper
Labs as designers dream of the company's next big
thing in sleep.

As a reflection of Harvey Milk's influence in the

queer community, the Harvey Milk Plaza is designed

as a procession for visibility and unity. The Castro

district houses this floating platform where anybody

can be seen if they want to be seen and anybody can

be heard if they want to be heard. This project was

designed for AIA's Harvey Milk Plaza competition in

2017.

The hovering path acts as a canopy to cover people from the elements as they enter
and exit the MUNI station. The underside is covered in tessellating, reflective panels
to project toward Market Street the celebrated diversity and imagery that is associated
with the Castro district.

Hidden within San Francisco are soft, flickering networks of urban transformation.

Companies such as Airbnb and VRBO are changing the physical landscape, challenging the boundaries

of privacy and how we understand home ownership.

	rising habitats
Rising Habitats is a botanical conservancy and education center located in the Port of Oakland's Middle Harbor Shoreline Park. The building consists of an on-land museum and a floating research institute that showcases the conditions of local ecologies. The natural environment exists as a system of interdependent forces, between flora, fauna, wind, water, and sun, in which each force utilizes, changes, and constrains one another. These natural systems are more important than ever as global warming and climate change worsen; for flood protection, filtering pollutants, and fostering wildlife. 
Over 90% of wetland habitats in the Bay Area have disappeared over the past 150 years due to major industrialization along shorelines, demanding a revitalization of these vulnerable zones. Referencing the work of the Bay Conservation and Development Commission and the objectives of Save the Bay, Rising Habitats proposes a new way of spatially interfacing with local wetland habitats. The architecture is used as an education tool, through its undulating form and soft boundary conditions, to reveal qualities of these habitats and forces that are otherwise unseen.

ASSEMBLY SYSTEM
The building is composed of 23 "chunks": prefabricated fibre-reinforced polymer panels

that are shipped and assembled on-site.

	atmospheric banking
The San Joaquin Valley, also known as the "Dust Bowl", is a vulnerable and elastic anthropogenic biome that exists according to its own set of rules. Actions - regardless of scale and location - have domino effects that are difficult to consolidate and observe. From its disappearing wildlife to its breathing geology, these intricate variables play a major role in&#38;nbsp;influencing an intricate formula. What complicates the Valley's condition is its intangible properties: chemical pollutants in the air cannot be seen and the sinking topography cannot be felt. Over long periods of time, these effects build up to have drastic consequences such as earthquakes, cancer, and disappearing aquifers.

A GALLERY OF POLLUTANTSA piece of infrastructure is proposed to sit along Central Valley highways as a museum of air pollutants that are otherwise invisible. These byproducts of industry, including agriculture and oil, have left detrimental impacts to local communities.&#38;nbsp;This refuge space brings visibility to the content in the air with the use of mesh textiles.

MEASURING AIR QUALITY
The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District monitors the quality of air throughout the valley and announces daily measurements with their Air Quality Index. The culture of air in the valley is commonplace and affects the day-to-day habits of locals. During times of poor air, communities are encouraged to carpool or commute by walking in order to lessen pollutant emissions. The Air Pollution Control District works closely with school groups to teach the effects of air and ways that it can be improved. With such local awareness of the conditions of air, the valley has garnered the attention of large institutions like the EPA and NASA.

Above is a study conducted by NASA and EPA in 2007 to gain a better understanding of the conditions of air in the valley. Using satellites, the density of aerosols in the air was measured, providing a profile of how high these pollutants travel.
